Dab rosewater or lavender water on your hair. Rub in and briskly brush your hair with it. Repeat until the greasiness has gone and your hair is sweet smelling.

Mild and gentle shampoo
1/2 oz. crushed soapwort root
2 pints boiling water
Place the soapwort in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave it to brew for 15 minutes, then strain.
Use half a cupful to shampoo your hair.

Mild herbal shampoo
1/2 oz. crushed soapwort root
1/2 oz. rosemary leaves or chamomile flowers or horsetail
2 pints boiling water
Place the soapwort and the herbs in a bowl and pour over the boiling water. Leave it to brew for 15 minutes then strain.
Use a cupful to shampoo your hair.

Floral shampoo
1 tablespoon of flowers or herbs
1 1/2 tablespoons borax
1 1/2 tablespoons sodium sesquicarbonate
2 tablespoons flaked soap
Carefully combine the ingredients with a pestle and mortar. To use, dissolve 2 tablespoons of the powder in 3 fl oz. of hot water. Leave to brew until cool enough to use.

Saving Money - lemon-balm  
Lemon shampoo
1 oz. lemon balm leaves
1 pint boiling water
2 tablespoons sodium sesquicarbonate
5 tablespoons of flaked soap
a few drops of oil of lemons
With half a pint of boiling water make an infusion of the lemon balm: in the other half pint melt the sodium sesquicarbonate and the flaked soap. Strain the infusion and combine both liquids, adding the oil of lemons.
Use a cupful to shampoo your hair.

Standard infusion: Pour 1/2 pint of boiling water over 1/2 oz. of dried herbal leaves or flowers and leave to brew for anything between 1/2 hour and 2 hours.

Egg and orange shampoo
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon orange juice
1 cup of soapwort infusion
Beat the egg yolk and the orange juice into the soapwort infusion and shampoo your hair using warm water.

Standard infusion: Pour 1/2 pint of boiling water over 1/2 oz. of dried herbal leaves or flowers and leave to brew for anything between 1/2 hour and 2 hours.

Dry 'root' shampoo
For greasy hair (or no time for a wet shampoo), try a 'dry' shampoo.
1/4 oz. arrowroot powder
1/4 oz. orrisroot powder
Mix the powders together and sprinkle into your hair, work it all over and well into the scalp. Leave on for 10 minutes and then brush out fastidiously with a fine bristled brush.

For greasy hair (or no time for a wet shampoo), try a 'dry' shampoo.
1/2 oz. fuller's earth powder
few drops oil of rosemary
Add the oil to the powder and blend it carefully in a pestle and mortar. When the oil has been absorbed by the powder sift it and sprinkle the powder into your hair. Leave on for 10 minutes and then brush out fastidiously with a fine bristled brush.

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Slowly heat the oil in a double saucepan. When warmed massage it into your scalp and all through your hair, then cover the whole of your head with a plastic shower hat. Cover this with a turban of a warmed towel (soak it in hot water and wring out the surplus). When the towel cools, repeat once and then shampoo your hair as usual making sure you remove all excess oil.
