........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - cooker

Don't open your oven door unnecessarily. 25 to 50 degrees F is lost each time, causing more electricity or gas to be used to reach the required temperature for cooking again plus if the food is not cooked for long enough at the right temperature it may be undercooked.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - eggs-3

To check the freshness of an egg, place it in a pan of cool water. If it sinks to the bottom, it's fresh. If it floats, throw it away.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - sea-salt

If you accidentally put in too much salt while cooking, all is not lost. Add a peeled potato and it will absorb the salt.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

When a cake recipe needs you to flour the pan, try a bit of the dry cake mix instead, or cocoa powder for a chocolate cake.

........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - onions

To remove the smell of onions, garlic and most other cooking smells from your hands, hold a stainless steel spoon in your hands under running water and rub your hands as though the spoon were soap. If your sink or taps are stainless steel you can rub your hands on these to the same effect.

........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - trolley

Try to do your weekly food shopping in a single trip. Top-up shops should be combined with other activities to save money on petrol and help cut down impulse buying.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - trolley-bulk

Buy in bulk, if you can. Larger packs of breakfast cereal, for example, use less paper and cost less than two small ones.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - bag

Reuse plastic bags when shopping for food.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - petrol

Keep shopping trips to a minimum, spend a whole day rather than two half days – cuts down on fuel consumption and parking costs.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - almonds

When food shopping try to purchase loose items rather than pre-packed. You are paying for the packaging.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - friends

If you place an order with a shop, see if you friends and neighbours want to add to the order to cut down on delivery costs.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - park+ride

Look out for park and ride schemes when going shopping, the parking is usually cheaper and you will save fuel.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - potatoes-sack

Buy in bulk where possible. Farm shops or markets can be very economical - a 56 lb sack of potatoes for approx £5-7 pounds is great value when the same weight in a supermarket would cost approx £20-25+.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - shopping-list

Plan ahead and spend time making a shopping list of the items you need. Then decide which of these items need to be best quality, taste, etc, and which, as far as your family are concerned, don't need to be anything other than 'generic'. Example, a certain brand of baked beans, tea or coffee might be crucial but eggs, sugar, washing powder or a bag of flour may not matter. Go online and check out the supermarkets near you. You may find a range of your needs are best bought from supermarket "A" and the rest are acceptable from the cheaper supermarket "B". Finally, buy the biggest packs available and cut down on shopping trips.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - herbs

Plan your meals from a different perspective. A typical 7g. jar of branded herbs can cost up to £1 so search out a local Wholesale foods or restaurant supplier in your area and see if, in these trying times, they will supply the public (mostly they will).

You'll be amazed at the cheapness of bulk herbs or spices.

Example, 280g jar of the same herbs for £4.85. A saving of £35+.

........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Saving Money - drain-4

To unblock a drain, drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets followed by a cup of white vinegar. Wait a few minutes then flush with hot water.
........................................................................................................................................................................................................
